I learnt during the course of As and A2 that stereotypes have a huge effect on what young people listen to for example: a Chav is more than likely to listen to RnB and a Emo will be more than likely to listen to Rock. There music taste is influenced by what they wear and also others around them. However I have just enforced a stereotype as different types of people are entitled to listen to any type of music. The media has also created propaganda- through films and radio and poster art as they attempt to persuade mass audiences to follow their policies to the critics of the time.
I’ve also learnt about the “hypodermic syringe”, according to this theory the media is like a syringe which injects ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience who as a powerless mass have little choice but to be influence – in other words you can watch or listen to something violent; then you may go and do something violent. Music videos are a powerful medium because they combine the energy of music with the power of visual images. While most people often don't pay a lot of attention to the lyrics of songs, the visual images that accompany the same music on TV have a much greater impact because they are impossible to ignore.
According to my research, up to 75 per cent of music videos contain sexually suggestive material. Women are often portrayed in a sexist manner, and alcohol and tobacco use is glamorized. More than 50 per cent contain violence, which often includes acts committed against women. ”Heavy metal and rap have received the most criticism for lyrics with graphic references to drugs, sex, violence, and hate aimed at women, minorities, gays and lesbians. Once relegated to the fringes: “rage" music has entered the mainstream of popular culture and has become the cash cow of the music industry. Artists like Eminem, Limp Bizkit and Slip Knot sell millions of records by giving direction to the anger and aggression in their mostly-male adolescent audiences.
In our music video we want to portray a broken relationship in relation to the lyrical context. We didn’t want to show any stereotypical context within the video, so we have decided to use a role reversal within the characters-this means that we will use the female character breaking up with the male. The music doesn’t have any inappropriate contextual lyrics, so I think that the song will be appropriate to the audience. However the audience may feel that the relationship between the characters is unusual but we wanted to portray the characters the way we interpret the song and the lyrics.
